How to Find Reputable Debt Consolidation Companies

If you are in the market to find a debt consolidator, then you’ll want to find a reputable one. Unfortunately this is one area where you can find some unscrupulous companies and the business is not regulated by the government in the same way that other industries are. Here are some warning signs to look out for.

If the debt consolidator won’t send you a brochure outlining their services, then you should avoid the company. There is no reason why a reputable company cannot provide you with a list of services and fees for the services. You have to ask yourself what they are hiding by not disclosing this information.

Any company that will not discuss their services unless you have provided them with all of your financial information should be avoided too. There is no reason why you should have to provide sensitive personal information in order to discuss the consolidator’s services.

Be wary of consolidator’s who ask for voluntary donations. Do not be fooled by this premise. The donation is not voluntary. It is one way the consolidator charges you a fee without calling it as such.

Avoid any debt consolidator who claims that they can change your credit history. This cannot be done by anyone. Unless a creditor removes the entry themselves, which is highly unlikely, the consolidator cannot have any negative credit comments removed from your report. All information stays on your credit history report for seven years. If you declare bankruptcy it will remain on your report for 10 years.

A reputable debt consolidator will tell you upfront what their services and fees will be. They will help you to design a budget that will allow you to get out from under the mountain of debt that you have. They will counsel you in regards to your credit card use and will encourage you to avoid using all credit cards. If you can’t pay cash, then don’t make the purchase. These pointers should help you find reputable debt consolidation companies.
